1 Fall Jacket, 2 Different Looks

1 Fall Jacket, 2 Different Looks

One of the most important fashion investments that you can make is in a great transitional coat. I’m talking the perfect coat to get you from sweating it up in the summer to freezing your buns off in the winter, seamlessly and unscathed. Now, I’ve been on the hunt for a new transitional coat for a few months now (my old one is looking pretty sad), and when I say I’ve tried on 50+ different options I am NOT exaggerating. Finding the right length, colour, and cut is a tough feat to take on, but I am happy to report that it is possible.

This double-breasted trench coat that I got from Zara is the ultimate staple piece for fall. It’s a flattering cut, it’s long enough to wear with all my knee-length dresses, and the colour goes with just about anything (including my skin tone). When shopping for an investment piece such as this one (think $200+), it’s important to consider how frequently you’ll wear it. I personally have been gravitating towards trenches recently because they are unbelievably versatile. You can dress them up or down and still look fabulous either way. Let me show you:

I’ve never really had a coat that pairs well with this dress, which sucks because I adore this dress. The only one I have that is long enough is my heavy winter coat, which I obviously can’t bring out when it’s still 10-15 degrees outside. My new trench works perfectly because it provides just enough warmth to make it a great in-between piece for the few months of fall weather that we’re afforded in Toronto. It also adds a touch of class, making it a great addition to all of my office wear and night-out looks.

Pairing a trench coat with midi or maxi dresses like this works because it creates a much sleeker silhouette. I love to wear black ankle boots with this grey dress to give it a bit of an edge, and I threw in these rainbow hairpins that I got at Toronto Fashion Week last month to add in a pop of colour!

DRESSED DOWN

Did I mention I’m obsessed with this outfit, because I’m OBSESSED with this outfit. If I’m being honest, it’s probably my favourite of the two. I love how well the smart trench coat pairs with such a casual look. It adds an element of street style to an otherwise basic outfit, and it works so well that Adrian has pretty much copied it from head to toe. That really goes to show you how versatile these coats can be.

The hoodie + beanie combo adds extra warmth to the mix, making it an awesome outfit to wear for those brisk weekend walks about town. Maybe you don’t work in an office and are able to wear casual clothes all week long. First of all, I envy your ability to remain ultimately comfy, and second I would easily wear this outfit every day of the week if I could. Did someone say #cozygirlfall?
