3 Beautiful Bruce Trail Hikes

3 Beautiful Bruce Trail Hikes

I am definitely one to preach the healing nature of.. well.. nature, which is why I am super excited to share this blog post with you. Lately, it’s been tough to stay motivated and stay active (without working out inside a gym which makes me nervous still), and with COVID on the rise again that is more a priority now than ever. Remaining healthy, both physically and mentally, is of the utmost importance as winter approaches in Canada and Adrian and I have been looking to Mother Nature to provide us with some much needed R&R. Never have I felt better than on our hike last week; communing with nature, taking in the peace and quiet, and physically removing myself from some pretty stressful environments. I’m telling you, I was buzzing. Continue reading for some of our favourite Bruce Trail hikes to date, and take a little time to collect some mental clarity for yourself.

Hilton Falls Conservation Area

Total distance: 4 km
Time: 1.5 hours
Difficulty: Easy

Hilton Falls Conservation Area is one of the easier hikes we’ve done lately. Just outside the city of Toronto, this area provides access to both hiking and biking trails, some longer than others. It’s easy to get to and is part of Ontario’s Niagara Escarpment. With watershed stewardship and resource management programs, this area is well protected and provides lifelong education and recreation for the entire family. Follow along the 4km Hilton Falls Trail to discover the sprawling ten-metre waterfall, along with other stunning views.

Quick Note: Due to the current COVID circumstances, you must reserve a time slot to enter the park. Time slots are 2 hours and currently require no fees, so just be sure to book in advance. To reserve your time slot, click here.

Scotsdale Heritage Farm

Total distance: 6 km
Time: approx. 2 hours
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Remember when I mentioned I was totally buzzing after completing one of our hikes? This was it. Recommended to us by my friend Erin, we embarked on the most peaceful and restorative hike I think I’ve ever been on in my life. There was beautiful wildlife, a number of different ecosystems (wetlands, forests, etc.), and the trails are very clearly marked. The farm was bequeathed to the Ontario Heritage Foundation in 1982, and over the years has become a popular site for film and photography shoots, and for good reason.

Quick Note: There is no entry fee for the farm. However, to help with costs and general maintenance, Scotsdale Farm is always open to donations. For more information on donating and/or planning events and shoots, check out their fundraising page or email friendsofscotsdalefarm@gmail.com

Niagara Glen Nature Reserve

Total distance: 1.2-2 km (depending on the route)
Time: 2 to 3 hours
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult (Moderate with the exception of the “Whirlpool Trail”)

If you’re in the mood for a drive and want to travel for your hike, Niagara Glen Nature Centre is a great spot to check out. Not only are you in the heart of Canadian wine country, but the views from these trails are also unparalleled. These routes can vary in difficulty and length, and just getting down to the trailheads is a bit of a trek in and of itself. Still, the work is way worth it as you overlook the flowing waters of the Niagara River, the flora and fauna that inhabits the area, and the magnificent geological formations dating back millions of years.

Quick Note: Hiking here is only permitted between the hours of sunrise and sunset (day-time) as some trails feature steep cliffs, rough terrain, and slippery rocks. This was one of the most mentally active hikes we’ve done, so be sure to keep your wits about you and plan your timing accordingly. Visit niagaraparks.com/hiketimes to find more information on sunset/sunrise times month-to-month.
